My AC was having a problem keeping up with the hot outside temperatures. However, now only half my inside coils are getting cold. Earlier today the outside line was frozen. I changed the filter and now it's only sweating badly. The inside temperature got to 88 degrees, and one hour later it's at 85. The airflow doesn’t seem to be a problem. Why would only half the coils get cool? Why would the outside line freeze up for one random day? Could a dirty filter be causing it to work too hard?
Often, when your air conditioning has trouble keeping the inside cool when the outside temperature rises, this is simply an indication that the refrigerant is low. There’s also a chance that a thermal expansion valve is not allowing enough refrigerant flow in the system. Either condition or combination of these conditions requires a professional HVAC technician, like ARS/Rescue Rooter, to diagnose the problem. You mentioned dirty filters and I might add that air filters do need to be changed or cleaned regularly, especially during the height of the cooling season.
