• AC makes loud noise at first

    Jul.12.2010

Whenever my air conditioning unit starts up it makes a loud drowning sound as if metal were humming but very loudly. After it is running for a while the noise either dies down or goes away. But it always returns whenever it kicks on again. It basically sounds like the unit is working harder than it should.

A technician should check the system’s operation. Sometimes the noise is simply caused by aging equipment and a compressor making excessive noise, but it can also be caused by refrigerant issues (such as overcharged or air in the refrigerant). The fan motor could also cause noise, and sometimes it is just vibration from the unit that can be helped by tightening screws. If the noise is coming from the compressor, there is a noise reducing additive available for use in the compressor if the unit is not within manufacturers warranty. Please have a professional HVAC contractor, such as the ARS/Rescue Rooter branch in Austin, TX at (512) 444-4ARS, give your system a complete check up.
