• Air conditioner keeps freezing up

My air conditioner keeps freezing. Three years ago, ARS changed the evaporator coil. The central air conditioning unit is only 6 years old. Why does the unit keep freezing up? It's the pipeline that goes from the unit to the air conditioning unit outside

This is a very common problem that could be caused by many things. It basically means that the system is not transferring heat like it is designed to. It could be a maintenance issue or it could indicate you have a major problem. Often the new evaporator coils will require more airflow than the older coils did. The airflow was okay with your old coil, but the new ones with Thermal Expansion Valves are much more sensitive to low airflow and respond by freezing up. First thing I would check is the filter. Make sure that it is clean and unrestricted if it is the washable type. If it is a disposable filter, make sure it is new. Be sure to use a basic air filter and not a restrictive one inch allergy free filter, and also check to see whether all of your supply registers are open. If the problem is airflow, we have had to modify existing ductwork to enable it to move more air, and sometimes we install a freeze protection thermostat to keep the compressor from running when it is getting too cold. Also, in some cases, the refrigerant level is low, causing freeze ups to occur. I would recommend arranging for a professional HVAC contractor, such as the ARS/Rescue Rooter branch in Houston, TX at (713/281/832) 777-7777, to perform a diagnosis of your system and find out exactly what is causing the problem.
