We have an outside air conditioning unit that makes a rather loud high-pitched whining noise when it is starting up and stopping. Is this anything that can be fixed?
Noises in your air conditioning unit can be caused by many things. Sometimes the noise is simply due to aging equipment. Some noises like the one you describe are in the fan and motor, and some that sound like this come from the compressor within your outdoor unit. If the sound originates from your fan motor, the fix may be as simple as the tightening of a few screws. A technician would need to observe the noise in order to determine if it is a normal noise that it is okay for the equipment to make or whether it is something that can and should be repaired. Also, spring is the perfect time to arrange for an air conditioning tune-up. If you get your system checked out and tuned up now, you could save yourself from a more expensive and inconvenient emergency repair visit later in the heat of summer. I suggest you contact a professional HVAC contractor, such as the ARS/Rescue Rooter branch in Indianapolis, IN at (317) 390-5555, to schedule an appointment at your earliest convenience.
