• Air conditioner was frozen

    Aug.31.2011

A few months ago, I came home to find that my air conditioner was frozen. I called my landlord, and he said it probably just needed some refrigerant and he would send someone to look at it. The tech came and replaced the refrigerant, but it ended up freezing again. The guy came out once more and said that the drain from the inside part to the sink was clogged, so he fixed that. He also said that I needed a new motor, and installed what I believe was a bigger motor for the blower fan. He did say this motor cost less (not my problem since I am not paying for it; I think my landlord owns this HVAC company). So he insisted it was fixed, but it is just not cooling right. I get almost no airflow upstairs. Then the other day the outside fan had stopped running, just was making a loud buzz. I turned it on today, and the outside fan was running. I want him to come look at it again, but are there any problems that I could suggest may be wrong?

There are so many possible issues that could cause the problems you are experiencing with your air conditioning. If the system has stopped freezing up since they replaced the blower motor, then I would suspect it was a bad indoor blower motor that would stop running periodically and allow the indoor coils to get too cold, creating ice. Another problem may have developed with the outdoor unit. If the fan does not turn but it is making noise, then its possible that the fan motor has bad bearings. Or, a capacitor could be bad so it would not start the rotation of the motor when it turns on. A professional HVAC technician would be needed to diagnose the issues involved. I suggest you ask the landlord if you can get a second opinion, perhaps from your local ARS/Rescue Rooter branch in Pittsburgh, PA at (412) 487-2400. Regular routine maintenance by trained HVAC professionals will make a significant difference in the performance of your air conditioning system.
