My AC unit stops cooling the house around 7 p.m. It is very hot here during the day, but the unit is still able to cool my townhouse in the daytime. I have checked the filters and checked the outside to make sure it’s debris free. I see condensation coming from the drain, and I have reset the thermostat. What is my problem?
Sometimes when houses are challenging to cool in the evening, the direction the home faces and the type of construction can be factors. If the unit is running okay but is suddenly unable to keep up in the evening, it could be that the west wall of the home is transmitting heat that was picked up by the sun striking that wall in the afternoon. Then there is a lag time during which the heat works its way inside. In these situations, the west facing wall is generally brick. If this is the case, the wall requires additional insulation. Another possibility is that your programmable thermostat may have a setting that turns the temperature higher at 6:00 p.m. daily. The programming should be checked during each day and each program period to be sure all periods are correct. I suggest you contact a professional HVAC contractor like the ARS/Rescue Rooter branch in Charleston, SC at (843) 747-2714.
