• Air handler blowing cold air into attic

    Sep.6.2011

My air handler located in the attic is blowing cold air into the attic. There is a strong breeze under the unit. From my understanding, this should be a closed system where cold air is only to be blown into the house. Can I seal all holes in the air handler?

You are experiencing the common problem of units and ductwork blowing air into the attic instead of into the house. Newer systems are designed and installed with low air leakage in mind. Any air gaps that you have should be sealed with HVAC foil tape or duct mastic which is designed to reduce the loss of conditioned air. Another frequent cause of this problem is duct connection that are loose are broken and in need of sealing. A professional HVAC technician, like the ARS/Rescue Rooter branch in Houston, TX at (713/281/832) 777-7777, can inspect the system and provide solutions.
