• Auxiliary heaters on heat pump

    Nov.8.2010

Shouldn't the auxiliary heaters be on during the whole heat pump defrost cycle and the air coming out of the registers hotter than normal heating temperature? So far, the heat pump is defrosting but without auxiliary heat. (It’s not real cold outside yet, however.)

Yes, you are correct. The auxiliary heat should come on and stay on during the heat pump’s defrost cycle. The air temperature at this time will actually be warmer than when the heat pump is operating in the heat mode. The auxiliary heat is designed to temper the air while the heat pump is in this mode, thus preventing cold air from being introduced into the ductwork. If your heat pump does not seem to be operating like this, I would recommend that you get it checked out by a qualified HVAC technician, such as the ARS/Rescue Rooter branch in Indianapolis, IN at (317) 390-5555.
