My air conditioning unit and furnace (variable flow 90% efficiency) are not working. Both are just two years old. I checked the house circuit breaker (seemed okay) and don't see the red indicator light on the furnace (flashing or steady) implying (I am guessing) no power to the unit. I even checked the fuse on the furnace circuit board to see if it was blown but that too was okay. The copper wires on the power supply seem okay too (no signs of burn out, etc.). There seemed to be no smell in the furnace compartment indicating a blown transformer, etc. What can I now do to troubleshoot the problem? Please help.
If there is no red led lighting up on the circuit board then it sounds as though you don’t have power to the board. The power starts at the fuse or single pole breaker which is usually marked “furnace.” Then it goes to the fuse/switch assembly mounted on the side of the furnace. There is usually a fuseholder on the switchbox. From there it passes through the door switch of the furnace, which has to be on and secure to allow the power to reach the circuit board. There could also be a problem with the board, but I would check all those items first to be sure it is capable of feeding 120 volt power to the furnace. Beyond this you would need to call a service technician to diagnose the problem and give you an estimate for repairs needed. If the problem is a part in the furnace, then the cost of that part is most likely under warranty, leaving you to pay only for labor and miscellaneous materials needed. I suggest you contact a professional HVAC contractor, such as the ARS/Rescue Rooter branch in Itasca, IL at (830) 430-6900, to assist you with these issues. It’s a good idea to schedule a tune up for your AC and heating systems when the seasons change. Consider asking your ARS/Rescue Rooter technician about one of our Home Service Plans.
