If my condenser unit needs replaced because of the compressor, am I bound to allow the technicians to dispose of my unit? My current HVAC repairman wants to charge me $250 to dispose of the unit. I know the refrigerant must be removed from the system in order to disconnect the lines by EPA regulations. Therefore, I should be able to dispose of the unit myself once the refrigerant is removed. I contacted the recycling center which is run by the county and they said I could bring the unit there for disposal.
When your compressor goes bad, your HVAC condenser unit needed replacing. You probably are already aware of this, but it is against the law to knowingly release refrigerant into the atmosphere. As long as you arrange for the proper disposal of any refrigerant, you are free to do whatever you would like with your HVAC equipment.
