• Can I replace my Moen shower cartridge?

Can I replace my Moen shower cartridge, model 1222, with a more simple cartridge that does not rely on pressure or temperature? This shower is far from the water heater and it takes a long time for hot water to reach the faucet. As a result, pressure varies beyond the model 1222's tolerance and reduces the flow to next to nothing or never warms. Help. Thank you.

No, the valve is designed for that cartridge only. The Moen 1222 reacts to pressure, not temperature, so the distance from the water heater should not matter. The entire valve would need to be re-plumbed. Before you do that, try replacing the existing cartridge. If that doesn't work, I would suggest you call a plumber to check for a possible restriction in the hot water lines before you replace the valve. If you do need a plumber and would like to try ARS/Rescue Rooter, our number in your area is (972) 503-8000.

Wait! Before replacing the valve, remove the balancing spool and tap it on the floor a few times and the reinstall the balancing spool part M1423. Visit the Moen website for illustration of the balancing spool M1423. When you first remove the balancing spool you should hear a rattling sound when you shake it. If not, tap it on the ground and you should unfreeze the internal ball bearing. Now reinstall it back into the valve. This balancing spool gets jammed up when the shower is not used for a long period of time. Now there is a money saving tip! Enjoy!
