• Coil disposal fee and code upgrade fee

    Jul.11.2011

I had a HVAC tech inform me that our AC evaporator coil needed to be replaced and that our home warranty would cover the cost except for the coil disposal fee and the code upgrade fee totaling $275.00 What are fees and are they normal?

While most companies do not charge for these services, some do. There is actually some scrap value for the copper in the coil. There isn’t much about an evaporator coil that would affect code. A fee for plenum alterations may be in order due to changes in the coil configuration, but not usually anything affecting code. Of course, if you have a home warranty company, you are welcome to contact them for their perspective on any fees. A recent ARS Home Connect question, from the Houston, Texas area, includes information that may also be helpful to you as follows. “Although there are no local codes regarding disposal of residential appliances or HVAC equipment, there is, however, the Clean Air Act section 608 that requires persons servicing or disposing of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment to certify to the EPA that they have acquired recycling or recovery equipment and are complying with requirements of the rule. The legal disposal of this type of equipment typically has a fee associated with it due to the time consuming nature of the recovery and disposal process.” I suggest you contact a professional HVAC contractor, such as the ARS/Rescue Rooter branch in Austin, TX at (512) 777-7000, for more information and for assistance with all your heating and cooling repair, installation, and tune-up needs.
