My heat is blowing out cold air for the past 12 hours or more. The hot water works fine. The gas company said my pilot light may be out. HELP, WE ARE COLD!
If you have a standing pilot, there will be instructions on the furnace for how to light the pilot light. A standing pilot furnace gas valve will have three positions on the gas valve knob: off, on and the pilot position. First, be sure to turn the furnace off. Put the knob in the pilot position and hold the knob down for 45 seconds after the pilot lights. Release the knob and the pilot should remain on. Turn the gas valve to the “on” position. If the fan is running all the time, and the thermostat and fan switches are both in the “off” position, a safety device, which is called a limit, may be tripped. You probably have a reset button. These are normally located in the burner area. Keep in mind if a limit has tripped, there is a reason, and the equipment should be checked out. The safest solution is to contact a professional HVAC contractor, such as the ARS/Rescue Rooter branch in Raleigh, NC at (919) 865-7777, for a complete system check.
