The thermostat was "off" when I came home from work yesterday. Cold air was blowing through the vents. I cut the power at the breaker to stop. What is the likely problem - fault switch at the wall (thermostat) or in the unit itself (in attic)?
When the furnace runs all the time even though everything is in the “off” position, you most likely have an open safety device like a roll out switch or a high limit switch. This could be a draft issue that you should have checked out by a professional. If the complete HVAC system is running, the thermostat may be at fault. If only the fan (blower) is running, the problem could be either the thermostat or a relay/contactor not working correctly. The best answer is to contact a professional HVAC contractor, like the ARS/Rescue Rooter branch in Austin, TX at (512) 444-4ARS, who can safely identify the source of trouble.
