• Did I put my new filter in correctly?

    Sep.22.2011

We run our air conditioning about 20 hours a day, and it is about 3 years old. The other day I put in a new filter, but I don’t know if I put it in backward or correctly. Well, today I noticed that every time the air conditioning kicked on it would make some sort of suction on the front panel and I could hear the panel being pulled in. I went to sleep and woke up sweating. Now, the AC isn’t working. I checked the breaker; it’s fine. The fan outside comes on but the blower motor in the unit won’t turn on. I hear humming and I felt a coil in the bottom and it had ice on it. Help! I’m in a mobile home and I don’t have a lot of money to call a service person to come out. My mom also lives with me. She just had heart surgery and she can’t live like this in this Texas heat! What can I do?

It sounds as though the new filter is too restrictive to airflow.  Remove the new filter and inspect it to be sure there was no wrapping or packaging left on the filter that would obstruct airflow.  The filter could be simply too restrictive for the system.  Many of the air filters sold that claim to reducing allergens in the air are very restrictive and can cause freeze-ups of air conditioning systems.  A less expensive less dense air filter is the solution in these cases.  If you are seeking to reduce allergy causing dust and airborne particles, an air filtration system can be installed in many systems that performs this function well without restricting the air flow. I suggest you call a professional HVAC contractor, like the ARS/Rescue Rooter branch in Dallas, TX at (214) 503-8000, to give your system a thorough checkup, as well as provide additional information about air filtration.
