• Does my water heater need to be replaced?

How will I know if my water heater needs to be replaced? Will it always leak water? My gas water heater won't stay lit. Does it need to be replaced? There is no water surrounding the tank. Does that mean it is not empty?

In most cases, residential water heaters that are out of warranty 5, 7 or 10 years (depending on the water heater), should be replaced instead of trying to repair them. The cost savings from a new water heater’s efficiency far outweighs the repair cost and lack of performance on an older water heater. By the time a water heater is out of warranty, it is prone to leakage, especially if it was not properly maintained. Water heaters rust from the inside out. That’s why they need to be flushed and inspected yearly.Water heaters do not always leak when they need to be replaced. However, if your water heater is leaking from the tank, you must replace it. If the water heater’s pilot light won’t stay lit, then you need to have a professional plumber check a few things, including the thermocouple, the gas control valve, and the burner assembly. I suggest you contact a professional plumbing contractor, such as the ARS/Rescue Rooter branch serving Denver, CO at (303) 418-6000 or (303) 696-6565.
