• Electrical problem related to AC

    Sep.22.2011

I had a HVAC serviceman come out yesterday. He said I had an electrical problem at the house. The electrician thought I had a problem outside the house. Then I had the electric company come out and they said everything was fine outside the house. The electrician then checked everything for the second time and concluded there was no problem inside the house or where the AC connects right at the house. Something kept causing the breaker to trip when the AC would try to turn on. The electrician suspected the compressor. We had a second HVAC service man come out and he had some weird readings but concluded it was the compressor from a power surge. A strong storm took out several electronics as well as my roof and skylights in April. Could the power issues I had from lightning have caused a delayed death of my compressor? To the best of my knowledge I have not had any other power surges or outages other than the one in April. Thanks

It is definitely possible for a power surge to damage electrical components, and, yes, there is sometimes a delay in seeing symptoms of the damage. A surge may weaken the insulation in the compressor. If that happens when the system is under its normal full load, it may cause failure of the windings in the compressor at a later date. Of course, there could also be an unrelated failure in the compressor. Always use a rreputable HVAC contractor, like ARS/Rescue Rooter in Olivette, MO at (314) 770-1620, to assist you in getting to the bottom of an issue of this kind.
