My digital thermostat is showing the emergency emblem on or flashing whenever the heat on our heat pump comes on. We are using about 200 kilowatt hours per day, which is almost double last year, with about the same outside temperature. Does this sound like a problem with the heat pump?
Your emergency heat indicator on your digital thermostat should not be flashing each time the heat pump comes on except in very cold weather. Since the emergency heat emblem is coming on and there is also high electric usage, there is very likely a problem in the heat pump’s operation. If your thermostat has been switched from Heat to Emergency Heat, then you will find that the emergency heat indicator will come on each time. If your system mode is set to normal Heat, then a professional HVAC contractor, like ARS/Rescue Rooter, will need to inspect and evaluate your system to determine the cause of the Emergency Heat running so much.
