• Evaporator coil

If I have a hole in my evaporator coil and all the Freon has leaked out, what needs to be replaced? Can you qualify for the tax credit if you only need to change the evaporator coil?

First, determine the exact model and serial number of your unit. Check with the manufacturer to see if the coil is still under warranty. Evaporator coils usually have a five-year warranty. If the warranty is good, labor and refrigerant replacement would be at your expense. If the coil is no longer under warranty, you should consider replacing the entire unit. Replacing your evaporator coil requires a qualified HVAC contractor and may not be cost efficient compared to replacing the entire unit with a high-efficiency system. The federal energy taxcredit is very specific regarding the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) of your system.  To qualify for the federal energy tax credit, the entire system would need to be replaced. Visit the ARS/Rescue Rooter Service Center Locator at http://www.ars.com/ars/locator.aspx to find the ARS/Rescue Rooter branch nearest you.
