• Fan never shuts off

    Dec.8.2011

We have a window heat pump that has been installed for a couple of years and it seems to heat just fine except for one problem. The fan never shuts off. I have read the manual and messed with the controls and, unless you shut the whole unit off, you cannot shut the fan off. Is this normal behavior for a window unit? My wife is about over all of the noise and excess power consumption and wants to buy an infrared heater. Do you think the unit was defective when we bought it?

At ARS/Rescue Rooter, we don’t service window units, but my understanding is that they are very inefficient. I’m sorry that I cannot provide any information on their normal operation. My best recommendation is to consider one of the new energy efficient options for heating and, perhaps, cooling. Among the types of equipment you should check out are: furnaces and boilers; heat pumps, dual fuel heat pumps, geothermal and dual-source heat pumps; and radiant heat systems. I suggest you contact a professional HVAC contractor, like ARS/Rescue Rooter, to personally evaluate your heating and cooling needs and recommend which would be most efficient and cost effective.
