• Fan won't stop

    Feb.22.2010

Went to turn on the heat last night (gas) but all I received was the fan blowing non warm air. Then I couldn't get the fan to stop blowing even with the system totally off (from the control panel), no matter what I did. Finally I went into the attic and turned the whole heating system off since it was the only way to get the fan to stop. I hardly ever turn the heat on so is it possible the pilot light just went out somehow?

If the fan is running all of the time with the thermostat in the “off” position and the fan in the “auto” position, you have an interruption in the low voltage 24-volt circuit. I suggest you check to see if a limit (safety switch control) is open. There are several limits on a gas furnace. It could be the high limit, which is an automatic reset that may have failed. This limit usually trips due to poor air flow, like with a dirty filter. Is this limit is open, it would need to be replaced. The other limits are most likely manual reset limits, and they are located in the burner area near the burners. These limits will trip due to flame rollout because of a poor draft. For instance, on a windy day, it is possible for the wind to blow down the flue and cause the flame to roll out. Another possibility is a bad 24-volt fuse on the circuit board. Your best option is to contact a professional HVAC contractor, such as the ARS/Rescue Rooter branch in Houston, TX at (281/713) 777-7777, to perform a complete system safety check.
