• Faucet sticks out of wall

I have an outdoor faucet where the pipe is sticking out about 4 inches. Is that ok?

When a house is first built the plumbers “rough” in the plumbing to the specifications of the blueprints so that it is set up to match where finish wall dimensions are shown in the blueprints. In most cases these outside faucets are plumbed in long and capped off for a pressure test. After all of the finish wall material (siding, stucco, paint, etc.) are completed, the plumber will come back and cut off these pipes and then finish installing these outside faucets (hose bibs). In some cases the plumber just fails to cut them short enough to allow for an acceptable looking hose bib. Normally the plumber installs the hose bib as close the outside wall as possible. I do not know of a building code requirement for the length. The pipe can easily be cut and the hose bib installed closer to the house. I suggest you contact a professional plumbing contractor, such as the ARS/Rescue Rooter branch in Dallas Texas at (214/972) 503-8000, for further assistance.
