• Freon leak or ruined with bleach?

    Jun.27.2011

When I moved in, the air conditioning unit was not functioning because of a capacitor (which was replaced). Since then I have poured bleach in the air conditioning chase. The air conditioning repairman first said there was no refrigerant in the unit. Then he said I have a leak, and now he says I ruined the unit with bleach because bleach is corrosive. Have I ruined the AC unit by using bleach?

I assume you are referring to the "chase" as the ductwork. I am not totally convinced that bleach caused your problem because that would depend on how much was used and how many times. However, bleach can be corrosive if not used properly. An air conditioning system should never lose refrigerant. Since your unit was empty of refrigerant I would say you definitely have a leak. I just can't tell you for sure whether or not the bleach caused the problem. Leaks can be a result of age and of the unit not being maintained properly. I suggest you contact a professional HVAC contractor, like the ARS/Rescue Rooter branch in Ft. Walton Beach, FL at (850) 243-1651 for a free estimate. ARS/Rescue Rooter also offers Home Maintenance Plans which will help assure that your system is properly and regularly maintained.
