• Furnace has a mind of its own

    Feb.22.2010

When our furnace won't come on and the temperature is below the selected temperature on the thermostat, we have to go and turn the switch off that is attached to the furnace, then turn it back on. Then it will come on instantly. But during the night, it will mostly NOT come on and getting up twice a night to flip the switch is getting old. We have your ARS sticker on the furnace and we have only had the house for about 3 years. The last check up on the furnace was before we purchased the house. Can you figure this out? It doesn't do this every time. It just seems to have a mind of its own.

Most likely the flame sensor needs to be cleaned. If the flame sensor is dirty, it will not sense the burners. Flame sensors indicate that a flame is present and are part of the furnace’s safety circuit design. The furnace should be checked annually, and this inspection should include cleaning the flame sensor. At the same time you should have a complete safety check. I suggest you contact a professional HVAC contractor, such as the ARS/Rescue Rooter branch in Indianapolis, IN at (317) 390-5555, for help resolving this problem. You may want to consider our ARS Home Service Plan (HSP) for your equipment. This plan includes preventive maintenance, tune-ups, and Priority Emergency Service, among other features.
