• Fuse blew and AC quit when vacuuming basement

    Sep.21.2011

I blew a fuse in the basement while vacuuming and, at the same time, the AC unit went off. I checked the circuit breaker for the AC and sure enough it was tripped off. I turned the AC circuit back to the on position and now the air will not come back on. Am I missing something? Could this be an electrical problem or do I need to power something else on (some magical switch I may have missed)?

In a properly functioning electrical system, the vacuum should never cause the air conditioner breaker to trip. The vacuum runs on 115 volts and the central AC runs on a 230 volt circuit, which should in no way be affected by a vacuum on a 115 volt plug-in circuit. Having said this, I would double check that the breaker was reset properly and is not still tripped. Grasp the breaker switch and firmly turn it to the full off position and then back on and see if it comes back on. Also, there is a separate circuit for the indoor unit and the outdoor unit. These will be separate breakers, most likely labeled AC and Furnace. Ensure both of these are on. If you need additional assistance, you should check with a professional HVAC contractor like ARS/Rescue Rooter.
