I am turning on my central heating unit for the first time since the summer. When I turn the heater on, it doesn't click on for the heating to start. The pilot light is lit.
The heat failing to click on could be a symptom of many issues. The most common answer to this question is that the gas valve on the furnace is stuck and fails to respond to the thermostat’s signal. It could also be a worn out connection on the thermostat. Since this is a gas appliance, I would definitely recommend getting a professional HVAC contractor, such as ARS/Rescue Rooter, out to look at it in person and determine the exact cause. We always encourage everyone to schedule a system safety check and complete tuneup twice a year, in the Fall and in the Spring.
