• Heat kicks on, then turns off completely

    Nov.30.2010

We recently bought a new home. We moved in March and used the heater the first month, then turned it off because it started to warm up. It’s November now and getting cold and we went to turn on the heater. It turned on, and you can hear it kicking on, but 2 to 5 minutes later it turns off. It doesn’t come back on and there was no heat coming out of the vents. Wondering what may be causing this problem.

Any time unusual behavior or operation is observed with a gas or oil burning appliance, I recommend that a technician be called in right away to inspect the appliance in question. The problem you have described can have a number of causes, either from the furnace not lighting or from the blower not coming on to move heat from the furnace to the house. I would not run the heater again until it is inspected for proper operation. I suggest you contact a professional HVAC contractor, such as ARS/Rescue Rooter, to inspect, clean and adjust your furnace annually according to manufacturers’ guidelines and prevailing Fuel Gas Code guidelines. Seasonal tune-ups are highly recommended, and you may want to consider a Home Service Plan to take care of tune-ups and routine maintenance that will head off problems before they start.
