I have a Trane unit and it is now about six years old. However, every time fall comes I have the same problem. I turn heat to auto, the flame symbol comes on, but the unit doesn't blow out. If I turn the fan to stay ON it blows heat out, but I don't like to leave the unit in the ON position because it runs continuously. What is the problem?
This sounds like a low voltage issue, possibly in the thermostat or on the furnace control circuit. The flame sensor may need to be cleaned as well. Flame sensors indicate that a flame is present and are part of the furnace’s safety circuit design. The flame sensor should be cleaned once a year and, at the same time, you should have a complete safety check. I suggest you contact a professional HVAC contractor, such as the ARS/Rescue Rooter branch in Nashville, TN at (615) 255-2111, and secure a Home Service Plan (HSP) inspection for your furnace.
