• Heat pump defrosts; house smells like dust

    Dec.31.2010

I have a heat pump and when it defrosts my house smells like dust.

The odor you smell coming from the heat pump unit is the auxiliary heat being turned on while the unit is defrosting. This is pretty common any time the electric heat has not run for an extended time. I would recommend you check the air filter and make sure it is clean. If the smell persists it may be a good idea to have an experienced HVAC technician, like ARS/Rescue Rooter, check the unit.
