• Heat pump is good option for central Florida climate

    Jan.27.2011

I am looking into replacing my current AC-furnace. I am wondering if a heat pump may be a better alternative for central Florida climate. What are your thoughts on heat pump versus traditional AC-furnace?

The heat pump is ideal for the central Florida climate. In general, there are not that many days that your temperature is below 30 degrees, so almost all of your heating needs are provided by the heat pump. A properly sized electric backup heat package will supplement the heat pump when necessary. Most of the time when heating is required the temperature is in the range in which heat pumps operate most cost effectively. When you switch from a gas furnace, be advised that additional electrical circuitry is necessary for the auxiliary heat package. Many people in this area prefer the simplicity of the heat pump with the electric backup heat as compared to the complexity of a gas furnace, and, in most cases, the heating cost is somewhat lower with the heat pump as compared to gas. If you are currently heating with electric resistance heat, the energy cost savings will be dramatic.
