• House won't cool down

    Aug.11.2011

My outside AC unit is about eight years old. The problem is that the house will not cool down past 81 even though I have the thermostat set at 76 degrees. It has been working fine up until two days ago. Could there be an issue where the condenser froze? It’s been very hot here the last week, and the air conditioning has been running quite a bit. What are some next steps I could consider?

The first thing to do when your air conditioning does not cool as you think it should is to check your filter(s) and ensure that they are clean. The condenser does not freeze in summer but the evaporator coil can. Also, if the condensate drain is slow and there is a condensate safety switch on the drain line, this can cycle the outdoor unit off and on even though the thermostat is calling, if it’s wired that way. If your filter checks out okay and you see no frosting or icing on the larger of the two copper lines, then I would suggest calling for service to check your system out. If your inside temperature climbs to 81 degrees during the high point of the daily heat and then comes back down at night, the problem could simply be due to the extreme heat if your location is experiencing high temps Again, let’s start by checking the air filter first. I suggest you contact your local ARS/Rescue Rooter branch, Andy’s Statewide, in Orion, MI, at (248) 391-2069 to set up an appointment. As your unit has a little age on it, it would be a good idea to consider one of our Home Service Plans so that you have regularly scheduled checkups and tune-ups
