• How is tonnage figured

    Nov.28.2011

I have a 1649 square foot home in Phoenix, Arizona and the air conditioning installation technician said that a 3.5 ton unit would be sufficient for the two story home. Please verify how they figure out what tonnage goes into your home? Is it based on square footage? And would this size be okay for my home?

Since every home is different there is no way to tell what size air conditioner would be the best fit for your home without completing a proper heat load. A heat load is where a qualified installer will calculate the correct amount of BTU’s needed for your home. If your installer followed the guidelines from your manufacturer, he should be able to provide the back up for his decision to choose a 3.5 ton unit. In several states the municipality where you live requires a copy of this paperwork for an approval on your permit, so you may check their records if your contractor can’t find theirs. Always choose a professional HVAC controller, like ARS/Rescue Rooter’s Goettl Air Conditioning, in Tempe, AZ at (602) 275-1515, for installation, tune-ups and repair of your heating and cooling unit.
