• Humidifier not working

    Dec.19.2010

I have a five-year-old furnace and the humidifier is not working. I checked the water supply line to the unit and it is okay, but water does get directed down through the pad (a new pad that I just installed). All electrical connections seem okay, and the control panel clicks once when I turn the dial to "test.” Oddly enough, the water pump activates periodically to pump water to the laundry tub drain, so moisture must be coming from somewhere. Like I said, the humidifier pad never gets wet.

The clicking noise you hear when you turn the dial to “test” is a set of contacts that close at the control, but the noise does not necessarily mean that the humidifier is operating. Since the furnace you have is a 90%+, I would assume the pump you referred to is not only used for the humidifier but also the furnace. When the furnace runs, condensation drains out of the furnace and into, I assume, the pump. This is probably the water you are seeing in the pump itself. Sounds like to me the humidifier is not operating properly and there are a number of reasons this could be. I would recommend you have an experienced HVAC contractor, such as the ARS/Rescue Rooter branch in Pennsylvania at (412) 487-2400, come take a look at your humidifier.
