Whenever I’m taking a shower and someone else turns on the faucet or flushes a toilet, I get blasted by either freezing cold or scalding hot water. Please tell me there’s a better solution to this problem than constantly screaming, “I’m in the shower!” at the top of my lungsIda, Atlanta, GA
Consistent water temperature and water pressure are the results of a properly designed and functional water system. The shower shocks you are experiencing may be due to a pressure balancing shower valve problem. In particular, the valve’s anti-scald feature, which prevents hot water from scalding you, may be malfunctioning. This is more likely to be a problem if you have an older shower plumbing system. Only a plumbing professional can properly diagnose whether your system is designed correctly, or whether the problem may be isolated to a specific fixture like the faucet or water heater. The good news is that, yes, there is a better solution.
