• I get a pinhole leak in coil every 9 months

    Aug.23.2011

I purchased a new air conditioning unit in 2006. Every year like clockwork I have had to replace the indoor coil. My technician has found a pinhole leak in the coils where they bend (U section). It seems that the coil will last for about 9 months before developing a leak again. My tech has talked to the manufacturer, but they say they know of no problems. However, the company did start making the coils copper instead of aluminum last year, though not before we got the last coil installed. Can you provide any information?

I can reassure you that the reason for the change from copper to aluminum coil was not due to any problems from leaking. All the manufacturers have, for the most part, gone back to aluminum coil and a coating as well. In certain homes there can be a high rate of out gassing caused from VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) and, when associated with certain materials, can cause a “funky” smell. The aluminum with the coating will keep this from happening. That is the reason for the change to copper, and not leak issues. Your paperwork supplied with the new equipment should have consumer contact information. Or you might contact them through the internet and voice your concerns with them directly. Regular air conditioning tune-ups, such as those offered by ARS/Rescue Rooter, will assist you with keeping your air conditioning in tip top running condition and help avoid expensive emergency calls.
