• In recovery is thermostat reading

    Dec.6.2010

This morning I was checking the thermostat on the wall and found the following reading: Inside 67 In Recovery Heat Setting 70 7:45am Auxiliary heat on. What does "in recovery" mean?

This digital message indicates that the programmable thermostat is bringing the temperature up from the lower overnight programmed temperature. This is normal operation, and often the thermostat will go into auxiliary heat during this time because it is boosting the temperature from a lower setpoint. Most thermostats have the smart recovery feature that begins this recovery at varying times before the new programmed setting. The thermostat uses logic and memory that builds a baseline for heating your home, and the equipment makes decisions when to start bringing the temperature up to the new desired temperature accordingly. This process ensures that the area will be at the desired temperature at the set time, instead of just beginning to bring it up to that temperature at the programmed time. Also, by using this look-ahead logic, the thermostat can use the heat pump as much as possible for recovery heating before it has to switch to the more expensive auxiliary heat. We don’t recommend varying the programmed setting more than six degrees between programmed periods, as that can cause the heat pump to call for auxiliary heat for a long time, possibly negating savings achieved.
