• Is there a cure for humming plumbing?

    Sep.11.2009

We are getting a loud humming noise whenever we run any water in our house it sounds similar to a tuning fork and if you place your hand on the inlet pipe in our basement you can feel it vibrating.  This noise happens regardless of the pressure or temperature coming from the sink/shower and it even happens when the toilet is refilling after being flushed. Please let me know if there is anything I can try before bringing a plumber in.

“Humming Plumbing’ is a common problem. The good news is that it usually is an inexpensive fix. The humming noise could be due to a couple of things. First, it could be excessive water pressure. Do you have a water pressure regulator? It is important to keep water pressure at the recommended level, which for home use is typically between 40 and 60psi (pounds per square inch). If the pressure is set too high, it can damage the toilet valves or other appliances connected to your plumbing. It could also damage or even rupture the supply lines. Another source of the humming could be a faulty ballcock (also called the fill valve) in your toilet. Or it could be the result of a loose or worn out washer. If you check all of the items listed above but the humming still persists, I suggest that you call a professional plumber. I hope this helps.
