• Lime buildup in my drain

    Oct.15.2009

I think I have lime build up in my 1975 built home; I saw it in the shower drain when cleaning and I put drain cleaner in it. What can be done about this?

Lime scale is a chalky, white mineral deposit that is a result of hard water (water with a high mineral content). A higher pH level (which measures the relative acidity) and hotter temperatures result in a larger quantity of lime scale. It often occurs on faucets, in bathtubs and appliances, such as kettles and coffeemakers, and can leave silver and chrome with a gray dullness. Over time lime scale can damage your sink, toilet and bathtub, and make soap scum harder to remove. Always dry faucets and bathtubs after use to avoid lime scale buildup. White vinegar contains acetic acid and, when diluted with water, is a great place to start for cleaning mineral deposits, which cause those pesky stains. Do not use drain cleaner on your shower drain; it does more harm than good. Your drain might need replacing. I suggest you call ARS/Rescue Rooter for a free plumbing inspection.
