I had 4 ton air handler installed and now I have issues with filters that are deformed while the AC unit runs and the unit runs excessively. The air return vent installed is only 14" inches, and it just does not seem adequate for a residence of approximately 2000 square feet and a four ton unit.
You are correct when you say that a 14-inch air return is not large enough for a 4 ton air handler. I would recommend you call the HVAC company back and ask to speak to a manager and explain the situation. Since they just installed the unit they should be more than willing to send someone out to look it over and assess your ductwork and returns. I would question if the 14-inch duct is the only source of return the unit has but it is possible. If you have any additional questions, I suggest you contact your local ARS/Rescue Rooter branch in Houston, TX at {713/281/832) 777-7777 to schedule a time when they can come check out your system.
