• My refrigerator is not working after Hurricane Ike

    Sep.30.2008

I lost electrical power for 10 + days since hurricane Ike. I did not have my refrigerator plugged in for most of that time. Since power has been restored, my fridge is on and running but it is not cooling. I got power back on Saturday the 27th. Does ARS service this kind of problem? My fridge is a side by side and is about 21 years old.

Refrigerators and freezers are designed to be running all the time and an older unit might experience problems restarting after a sudden shut off like you had due to Hurricane Ike. You should have your refrigerator checked out by an experienced technician, as the issue could be something small, like a relay problem, or more severe, like a compressor malfunction.

Although not all ARS/Rescue Rooter branches service appliances - the Houston branch does and I would recommend you call today to schedule an appointment.

I need extra refrigeration over the holidays and wonder about buying a second fridge. However, I would leave this fridge unplugged for most of the year, except when I had a really full house. Would leaving it unplugged be bad for the fridge?

I would not recommend leaving the refrigerator unplugged. As the refrigerator cools it causes condensation to form around some of its mechanical parts, especially the motor. By unplugging the refrigerator and letting it sit for long periods of time unused, you take the chance of these parts malfunctioning. If you live in an area with high humidity, you may even run the risk of growing mold. Your best bet is to purchase a refrigerator that will handle the busy holiday season but that is not too large for use the rest of the year.
