• Need a new dryer vent

    Jan.6.2011

I had a licensed electrician run a dryer vent for me recently (five feet up and through the ceiling, 20 feet across attic with flexible ducts with holes in it, with terminal end just sitting in insulation). It is a fire hazard and I refuse to use it. I need someone to do this right, going down through floor, 8 feet across crawl space and out, using hard duct. I also need someone to check my ducts. I occasionally have plastic and insulation fly out the vent into the living room so I have a feeling there is a hole in a duct under the house or a critter in the system. Can you help? Thanks

Whether the configuration you describe is a fire hazard or not would depend on what kind of flex duct was used. However, I would strongly recommend you call a reputable HVAC company, like ARS/Rescue Rooter in North Charleston, SC at (412) 487-2400, and have the technician rerun the vent. The vent must be run outside of the home in the shortest manner possible; a lot of areas have codes as to how and where a dryer vent can be run. I would also recommend that you ask that the new vent is made of metal pipe and not flex duct. The fact that the dryer vent is pumping into the attic is not good. This introduces warm moist air into the attic that could cause condensation and even promote mold growth. At the same time, the HVAC company installing the dryer vent should be able to check the furnace duct work for obstructions or other problems. If indoor air cleaning is a concern for you, ARS/Rescue Rooter can help you with that as well.
