What is the appropriate ton air conditioning unit needed for an 1162 square foot home with 3 bedrooms and high ceilings (approximately 20 foot)? Also what SEER would you recommend?
First, the easy answer. I would recommend a 14 to18 SEER unit, depending on how much you were planning to spend. As far as sizing the unit, the following are a number of other factors that have to be considered in addition to the information you have provided: Which direction the house faces, the size and number of windows and doors, the type of windows, framing structure with 2x4 or 2x6 walls, insulation level or R value in the attic, the color of the roof shingles and more. I would recommend you contact a reputable HVAC company, like the ARS/Rescue Rooter branch in Houston, TX at (713/281/832) 777-7777 to run a heat loss/heat gain calculation to determine what size equipment your home requires to heat and cool it most efficiently and comfortably.
