When I turn on the heat, the fan on my heat pump will run and it makes a noise as it is trying to run. However, the fan doesn't work the same way it used to and heat is not being produced. What should I be looking for? Is there a possibility of repair or should I proceed with a new unit? I don't know the exact age of the heat pump but it looks old. Thanks.
Replacing the heat pump with new energy efficient heating equipment is the way to go. I would guess that the motor most likely has bad bearings. If the bearings are bad the motor will overheat and shut down. There is no fix for motor bearings, and the motor would have to be replaced. Or, possibly you may need a new run capacitator. If the capacitator is weak or broken, the motor will not run. Each of these issues requires the services of a professional HVAC contractor, such as ARS/Rescue Rooter.
