• Okay to substitute one fuel for another?

    Aug.11.2010

I was just wondering if you could answer a question for me. I'm out of heating oil and don’t have the money to get the required 100 gallons for a delivery. Since it's summer and I only need it for hot water, everyone keeps telling me to get diesel fuel. Is that ok? It won't break the furnace will it?

I never recommend using an alternate fuel unless the equipment manufacturer lists it as a suitable fuel source. The heat content and properties of combustion will be different between fuels, and an unrated fuel could cause improper or unsafe operation. I suggest you contact a professional HVAC contractor for recommendations regarding your fuel needs.
