• Replacing shower faucets

    Nov.4.2008

I am replacing the shower faucets. They are recessed. I got the hot water stem off but can't get the cold water stem off. I have used a liquid wrench and a socket wrench. I have broke of a good portion of the stem by using a pipe wrench. Nothing is working. Help!!

If you are trying to replace your shower faucets (not disassemble/rebuild for refurbishment), you do not need to take them apart.  You just need to access, remove and reinstall.

If you are trying to rebuild them, it seems like you are approaching the project correctly, assuming that you have a standard “stem and seat” type shower valve. The fact that you mentioned using the liquid wrench as lubricant is very wise and I suggest that you also use it on your seats before you try to remove them as well.

To properly rebuild the faucets/valves, both the seats and stems should be replaced. However, that is usually not an easy task. The older the faucet/valve, the harder it is to remove the stems and seats. Unfortunately, if you cannot get the old stem out, it is unlikely that you will be successful at removing the seats without proper tools and experience. Rebuilding older faucets is usually a job for a plumber who has significant experience working on plumbing fixtures/faucets.  As you mentioned you are having difficulties, I recommend contacting a qualified technician to ensure the project is completed properly, and most importantly, safely
