• Roots are clogging my sewer lines

    Sep.9.2008

My main drain pipe keeps on getting clogged up by roots outside. I have gotten it unclogged three times over the past two years, and they keep on coming back. Would replacement stop this from happening, or is there something that can be done to stop this altogether?

Mainlines clogged with roots is by far the most common cause of blockage. Your situation is very common in older homes that may be in need of sewer line repair or replacement. The fact that you are experiencing the problem this often is not a good sign, especially if your line has been “unclogged” by a plumbing professional.

Your next step would be to figure out if the problem is within a specific area of the sewer line, or the line in its entirety. This difference will greatly affect the cost of the repair needed to correct this problem. I recommend having your sewer live evaluated by a professional. Most reputable plumbing companies have sewer video inspection equipment that visually inspects the integrity of the sewer line, thus removing all guess work or speculation. The camera will all you to see exactly where the problem is, and allow the technician to provide you with options to correct the problem.
