My brother recently ran his clothes washer drain into the sewer drain and now he gets sewer smells in the shower and laundry room. What can we do to prevent that from happening?
There are several possible answers to this question. First, I recommend you check out the vent line that should have been installed with the new line your brother put in. Make sure it is properly sized and installed in the correct location. If all of that checks out, you could be getting a siphon effect when your washing machine discharges the water. The amount of water flowing through your line could be sucking the water out from the P-Trap located in your shower and laundry room drains. Your best solution would be to contact a professional plumbing contractor, such as the ARS/Rescue Rooter branch in Olivette, MO at (314) 770-1620, to check out the problem and correct any drain and/or vent line issues.
