• Spontaneously flushing toilet

My toilet seems to run a lot. It will spontaneously flush. I am on the second floor of a four story condo building. Does this have to do with my toilet or the plumbing of the entire building? If it is my toilet, what can you do to fix it?

The problem is related to your toilet — not the whole building. This is a very common problem and may be due to a single part malfunction, but more likely, your toilet tank needs to be rebuilt.

If the flush valve flapper is old and deteriorated, water can seep through lowering the level in the tank and making your toilet flush. Once the water level lowers, the fill valve fills the toilet tank.  When the water meets the proper level, the toilet shuts off. This cycle keeps happening over and over, making your toilet flush spontaneously.

You can take the route of only replacing the flush valve flapper in the toilet tank, rather than replacing all the parts with a rebuild, but you may experience more parts malfunctioning — thus costing you more money to replace each individual part as opposed to them all at one time.

I recommend taking care of the complete toilet tank repair to ensure your toilet repair problem ends sooner rather than later.  Also, think of the water you are wasting by your toilet having a mind of its own.
