I have a leak in my upstairs bathroom (standing shower) which leaks into my family room downstairs. When we take a shower sometimes it leaks and then it totally stops for weeks and then again it starts leaking. What do you think the problem is?
This could be your shower pan or shower pan drain connection. If standing in the shower puts weight on the drain connection or there is a crack in the shower pan, then the leak could appear sometimes but not all the time. There could be a leak on the outside of the shower pan. The caulking or tile grout may have developed a leak and it only shows up downstairs when water is splashed into the caulking or grout. The best way to test for shower pan leaks is to plug up your shower drain, fill up the pan and watch it for a couple hours. If that holds well and you see no noticeable leaks, then you can drain the water out and check for a possible drain leak by letting water run through your drain for 15 to 20 min.I suggest you contact a professional plumbing contractor, such as the ARS/Rescue Rooter branch in Itasca, IL at (630) 438-6300, to diagnose and correct your leak.
