My heating/air conditioning unit comes on for 15 minutes in the middle of the night. Even though I get up and turn it off, it makes no difference. I contacted the people who make the thermostat and they said there was no problem with that so it must be the furnace. Have you any ideas what could be the matter? The system is only 2 and a half years old.
This could very simply be a short in the control board. It could be an indication of a furnace safety malfunction as well. I would recommend getting a trained technician out before you need the heat again. It could be something very simple but best not to take a chance when dealing with gas appliances. I suggest you contact a professional HVAC contractor, such as ARS/Rescue Rooter, to do a safety inspection and tune up. In order to ensure the most efficient operation and to head off many problems, these tune ups should be conducted two times annually, once in the spring before the AC is turned on, and again in the fall prior to cold weather.
